Freeport High School is excited to invite interested students and their families to their annual Enrichment/Gap/Summer Program Fair on Tuesday, November 12, 2024, from 5:30-7:00 pm in the Freeport Performing Arts Center Lobby! This event offers students the chance to explore both local and international opportunities that can enrich your education and personal growth. Sophomores, juniors, and seniors who are eager to take a break from traditional studies to travel, work, volunteer, or pursue a passion project are encouraged to attend! Programs are available for varying lengths of time—from a summer or semester to an entire gap year studying abroad. It’s a fantastic opportunity for students to gain new perspectives before entering college or the workforce! GHS Student Leaders off to Maine Youth Leadership Day at Hyde School today!

Juniors and seniors- are you interested in helping plan the prom? Join the prom committee! We choose the theme, make the playlist, pick out food and drink options, decorations, and so much more. SafeBAE Club is meeting on Wednesday mornings in Mrs. Drury’s room. We are a club for students at GHS who are interested in learning about consent, building awareness around topics related to sexual harassment and sexual assault. Our next meeting is NEXT Wednesday, the 23rd at 7:20am.

SCHOLARSHIP OPPORTUNITY FOR JUNIORS: The Coolidge Scholarship is an annually awarded, full-ride, presidential scholarship that covers a student’s tuition, room, board, and expenses for four years of undergraduate study. The Coolidge may be used by recipients at any accredited college or university in the United States. Any high school JUNIOR who plans to enroll in college in the fall of 2026 and is an American citizen or legal permanent resident of any background, pursuing any academic discipline of study, may apply to this non-partisan, need-blind, program (current high school seniors are NOT eligible to apply). Finalists are flown in for a finalist weekend at the Coolidge Historic Site in Plymouth Notch, Vermont where they interview with the Coolidge Scholars Finalist Jury. Recipients of the Coolidge Scholarship are notified of their award late in their junior year, before college application (note: current high school seniors are not eligible to apply). Finalists who are not named Coolidge Scholars are eligible to receive a smaller, one-time, college scholarship. The summer before their senior year of high school, newly-selected Coolidge Scholars spend several orientation days at the picturesque birthplace of the President, Plymouth Notch, Vt. There, scholars get to know Coolidge and his world, and help the Coolidge Foundation oversee its formidable debate programs. Scholars return to Plymouth Notch for a week each summer while in college. Although only a few students are named Coolidge Scholars each year, one hundred of the top Coolidge Scholarships applicants are named “Coolidge Senators.” Coolidge Senators are invited, all-expenses-paid, to participate in the Senators Summit that takes place each summer. At the Summit, learn about President Coolidge and his world and meet other high achieving students from across the country. The Coolidge Scholars Program is operated by the Calvin Coolidge Presidential Fund. Please be aware that this application requires that candidates read President Coolidge's Autobiography and a few other readings, and then write three essays. Based on this information, interested students are encouraged to begin the application early! The competition for this scholarship is significant; only a few new Coolidge Scholarships are awarded each year from a pool of candidates that spans the entire country. Again, as mentioned above, one hundred of the top Coolidge Scholarship applicants are invited to participate in the Coolidge Senators Program which includes an all-expenses paid summit gathering and a $1,000 scholarship. Scholarship applicants are automatically considered for the Senators Program. For any students interested in learning more about what the U.S. Navy has to offer, Petty Officer Brian Canaday will be set-up at the table in front of the cafeteria during the lunches on Thursday, October 24th - please feel free to stop by and ask any questions that you might have!

The University of Maine Fort Kent is holding their Fall 2024 Open House on Friday, November 1st! Their Registration and Student Services Fair takes place from 8:15-9:00 am, Welcome & Introductions take place from 9:00-9:15 am followed by Student Panel Presentations from 9:15-10:00 am. There will be an Academic Presentation from 10:00 - 11:00 am and then Lunch and Campus Tours from 11:15 am - 1:00 pm. They will wrap the day up at 1:00 pm in their Fox Auditorium with a question and answer session, and raffle prizes will be awarded! If students are attending with family, please register individually. Parents/guardians are also required to register. An Admissions Representative from USM, Nicole Young, will be in the Guidance Office on Tuesday, October 29th at 11 am to speak with any interested students. Please feel free to get a pass beforehand and come to Guidance at 11 am if you'd like to learn more about USM and ask any questions that you might have!

The GHS History Club is a group for students who are looking for opportunities to explore their interests in historical topics and broaden their understanding of how the past has influenced the present. Activities of the History Club may include visits to museums, guided tours of historical sites, conversations with scholars engaged in historical research, and movie nights. Interested? Attend a brief meeting in Mr. Farrington's room at 7:20am on Tuesday, October 22.

Applications are now available for the 2024 Clyde Russell Scholarship! The Clyde Russell Scholarship Fund (CRSF) offers financial awards to Maine graduating high school seniors to attend a 4-year college or a Maine community college. There are two categories of awards as follows: Graduating High School Seniors Who Will Attend a Four-Year College and Graduating High School Seniors Who Will Attend a Maine Community College. Awards for students who will attend a four-year college will not exceed $10,000. Awards for students who will attend a Maine Community College will not exceed $2,000. Application forms for the scholarship must be downloaded from their website, clyderussellscholarshipfund.org between October 1, 2024 and January 31, 2025. The deadline is February 1, 2025.
